Graduate Student Handbook
Summer Teaching Assignments
Many graduate students will receive a summer teaching assignment if they request one. The assignments for summer teaching are based upon the following priorities:
- MFA students between their first and second years of study who are making satisfactory progress and have received a grade for LAE 6947.
- MA students between their first and second years of study who are making satisfactory progress and have received a grade for LAE 6947; MA students continuing on the the PhD; and PhD students between their first through fouth years. Ranking among these categories of students is based upon GPA.
- In the event that any assignments are still available: all other students who are making satisfactory progress, including those who are past their allocated years of funding (2 for MA and MFA; 4 for PhD)
Because the prioirity list for the majority of students requesting summer teaching is based upon GPA, it is especially important for students who desire summer teaching to remove Incompletes from their records before they become punitive that is, before they are calculated in the GPA as the equivalent of E (a failing grade at UF.) This occurs if the Incomplete is not converted to a letter grade within one semester of receiving the Incomplete.
MA and MFA students who are not going on for the PhD: you should be aware that summer teaching is not normally extended during the summer after your second year of study, so it is important for you to plan your time well in order to finish your degree by the spring of the second year.
