Notes
- In electives, it is recommended that students take 1 course in lit, art, history, or culture prior to 18th century and 1 course in 19th-century American lit, art, history, or culture.
- Theory is construed to include cultural studies and feminist studies. If possible, one of the theory courses should be taken in the first semester of study.
- By the time the student has earned the PhD, it is recommended that s/he would have at least a reading knowledge of two languages (German and French are generally recommended; however, depending on the direction of one’s work, Latin and Greek may be equally or more valuable).
