Shyam Selvadurai was born in 1965 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He came to Canada at the age of nineteen with his family after the 1983 riots in Colombo. He has studied creative writing and magazine writing and has a B.F.A from York University. His first novel, Funny Boy, was published in 1994, and won the W.H. Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award, and in the U.S., the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Mens Fiction. Funny Boy was also published in the U.K. and throughout Europe. His second novel is called Cinnamon Gardens.
