Barbara Mennel

Associate Professor, Waldo W. Neikirk Professor

Barbara MennelMy current book project Women at Work in Twenty-first Century European Cinema is scheduled to be published in fall 2018. I spent last academic year 2016-17 as the Marie Sklodowaska-Curie FCFP Senior Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, Germany. There I presented a talk “The Politics of Voice in the Cinema of Migration” at the conference “Literature, Culture, & the Work of the Humanities” in July 2017. My book Queer Cinema: Schoolgirls, Vampires, and Gay Cowboys (London: Wallflower Press, 2012) has been translated into French as Le Cinéma queer (Paris: L'Arche, 2013) and my book Cities and Cinema (London: Routledge, 2008) has been translated into Chinese in 2016. The second revised edition is currently under contract with Routledge.

I regularly attend the conferences of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. When I can, I also attend the German Studies Association, the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies, and Women in German. I am on the editorial board of the book series Film Europa: German Cinema in an International Context and of the journal German Quarterly. My most recent review is scheduled to appear in Studies in European Cinema. I am in a joint appointment with the German section of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and I am affiliated with the Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Research, and I am currently serving as the Interim Director of the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere.
