Colloquium

  • We should get printed material based on what we've got -- no new work is needed. We should be able to use the e-mail announcement for text. Jeff Rice has been contacting several on-campus departments about the colloquium.
  • Victor's MOO will be at 5 pm on October 15th. Jane Love will provide the group with some copies from his book so we can familiarize ourselves with his scholarship. See also http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~love/VV_CWWG/VV.html. Sid can help get copies made.
  • Ronan noted we need to make sure we stay on top of educating ourselves and each other on presenters during the colloquium.
  • We will be posting a log from the presentations, on the web and on the MOO.
  • Bradley will build a space for presentations if nobody else can do it.

CW2001 (Computers and Writing 2001)

  • Great grad-friendly conference, ideal if comp/rhet is your thing.
  • deadline: Oct. 17
  • URL: http://www.bsu.edu/cw2001/
  • CFP on mail archive: http://web.clas.ufl.edu/archives/cwwg/msg00569.html
  • at Ball State in Muncie Indiana
  • they will possibly provide accomodations for graduates
  • no limit on submissions but they will be selective this year
  • Theme: 2001, A Cyber Odyssey (echo Kubrick)
  • Ideas should be discussed on the list; if many people are interested, a brainstorming session (such as was done for 4 Cs) could be arranged

DAC (Digital Arts and Culture conference)

  • Focused on themes that are similar to the ones our colloquium is based around
  • Terry Harpold was one of the organizers last year and is involved with proposal selection this year
  • Nov. 1 deadline
  • URL: http://www.stg.brown.edu/conferences/DAC/
  • Abstract is 1500 words--fairly long for an abstract
  • At Brown, in Providence RI. $99 airfare on Southwest now, so could be affordable.

CLASNET staff additions

  • Hiring four new people in computing--totally reorganizing. This will take a while but all new hires should be around in Spring.
  • These new hires should be good for NWE instructors as the more contact we get with technical staff the more competent we become in the labs

NWE upgrades

  • Network infrastructure being upgraded from 10Mb to switched 100Mb. This should improve terminal response, especially during peak load times.
  • As part of the College IT restructuring, by next year the NWE will be converted to Sun computers running the Solaris operating system. This won't change the software much right away.
  • As the NWE will be completely changing, the desktop will be completely redesigned. This will happen during Spring 2001. The practicum may be involved with this work.
  • Start your wish lists now--any new equipment or software you would like to see, make sure to post to list. CWWG can affect the process.

New ITS position

  • Tentatively, a new person will be hired in addition to our current only ITS person, Bradley. English and CLAS are working together to make this happen. Stay tuned.

IMAGE lab

  • Ready to go, w/ the exception of a few cardboard boxes lingering and some other glitches.
  • Dilger will hold office hours there next week.
  • You will be able to check out a key for the lab through Lee Whitten in Rolfs 111 (hopefully). Watch for mail on NWE list.

Workshops on Flash, Photoshop, etc.

  • Put off until after SLS.
  • Can occur in IMAGE lab.
  • Don't have to be formal -- can be just brainstorming or collective work time.
  • First of these times scheduled for 13 October (note: MRG is meeting at 5pm that day).

MOO

  • Brendan Riley has been sending NWE links for the MOO for people outside UF who request a MOO character for the colloquium.
  • We will need at least one person to act as a 'helper' to people unfamiliar with the MOO during colloquium presentations. Jeff Rice volunteered for this.
  • Tari Fanderclai has some excellent on-line help for brand new MOO users. Find it at http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~tari/connections/getting-started.html

Football & housewarming party

  • Ronan is having a football/housewarming party this Saturday. Consult mail archives for address and phone #. Do not let the football dissuade you if you don't like the sport; plenty of fun for everyone.

SLS (Society for Literature and Science) Conference

  • Folks who are going: Riles, Ouimet, Sullivan, Ronan, Goodwin, Dilger, Tripp, Goodwin. (Maybe others.) Those folks will talk among themselves to plan carpools and stuff.

MBA graduate class

  • Two NWE instructors are needed for a graduate level writing class to be taught next spring. See Sid Dobrin for details.

Next meeting: after SLS; date tentatively set for 27 October (Friday).
