1. September Showcase
We reviewed the work already done: The event has been scheduled for 15
September at 4 p.m. in Rolfs 105. John Leavey has reserved the Keane
Faculty Center for a showcase reception sponsored by the English
Department, 6-8 p.m. Information about the event has been posted on the
CLAS IMaGE Lab web site at http://web.image.ufl.edu/projects.html.
We discussed what remains to be done: We need to get commitments for at
least 8 projects to display. We went over a list of ten definite or
possible projects, and developed plans for contacting possible
presenters and securing commitments. We concurred with Bradley's
proposal that the program begin with a brief general introduction
followed by very brief project descriptions, and that the entire
introduction should take more than a half hour so guests could have time
to see most or all of the projects set up around the room. Bradley said
that has confirmed support from CLAS to obtain Macs, PCs, and whatever
other equipment we may need to display projects not supported by the
Unix platform. Stephanie suggested that we make sure the event is
listed on the University's Web calendar and that we try to get some
coverage in the University Update that is inserted in the Alligator
every Wednesday. Bradley said we could probably obtain College support
to produce some fliers.
2. Logo contest
We discussed the pros and cons of postponing the contest until the fall
semester in order to get as many high-quality submissions as possible.
Bradley noted that art students, obvious candidates for a design
contest, seldom take summer classes. On the other hand, we agreed that
the new logo would be integral to the CWWG site web design, and we all
expressed a desire to have a really nice-looking Web site by the time of
the showcase (see item 3). We agreed that it would be better to
announce the start of the contest at the showcase rather than a winner.
3. CWWG Web site
We discussed the state of the Web site and what needed to be done to get
it in shape for the showcase on September 15. Bradley noted that, while
the site currently has a lot of good, up-to-date information, the design
isn't very snappy. Brendan said that he and Harun, the current
webmasters, have reached their present design limits with the site
already in place and welcomed ideas and assistance. We discussed the
timing of the logo contest (see above) and the problems that would pose
to developing a design by September 15. Michael and Stephanie
volunteered to produce a design template that could be used until we get
a new logo, and Bradley suggested that members of his Perl class could
develop scripts to update the newly designed Web pages automatically.
Meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m. We did not set a date and time for our
next meeting. :-(
