This paper addresses fundamental issues of time, narrative, and memory
as these are figured in the graphic novel. It begins by asking about the
terms we use, what constitutes a 'graphic novel', how it might be
distinguished from a comic, and so on. Drawing on matters of narrative
complexity and issues of fragmentation, the paper examines a range of
graphic novels,
with emphasis on the work of Neil Gaiman.
