In this paper, I explore the relationship between Frederick Wertham's infamous critique of comic books in Seduction of the Innocent and Scott McCloud's explanation of sequential art's expressive power in Reinventing Comics via my "participation" in a scene from Fox Interactive's computer game The X_Files. By subsequently revealing what I hold to be an extraordinary structural similarity between both Wertham's and McCloud's models, I hope to call into question many of the assumptions maintained not only by comics' would_be_censors, but also by many of those comics creators and critics who seek to validate and/ or champion the artistic possibilities of said medium. In so doing, I seek not only to hold open the possibility for the future of comics, but to show how that radical possibility may necessitate a threat against traditional conceptions of artist, reader, expression, and immersion.
